A bond forged through a common Orthodox faith left a lasting imprint on Ethiopia’s music Irina Costache |  October 10, 2025 The 40 Armenian orphans with their leader, Kevork Nalbandian , in the middle holding a violin. (From the archives of St. George Armenian Apostolic Church in Addis Ababa , Ethiopia) In the spring of 1924, Ras Tafari Makonnen , Ethiopia’s crown prince, regent plenipotentiary and de facto ruler, embarked on a diplomatic world tour. His country had just become the first African nation admitted to the League of Nations , and the prince (later to become Emperor Haile Selassie ) wanted to thank the countries that had supported Ethiopia’s candidacy, display his country’s modernity and ensure its sovereignty would be respected. Before continuing toward Europe, Tafari made a stop in Jerusalem. Back home, the Ethiopian Church questioned the prince’s religious devotion, so the visit was meant to be a symbolic demonstration of his piety. Tafari made his way...

What Is In A Name?

What Is In A Name? By Mitiku Adisu   In the American Deep South the Ethiopian-born, 1-year old baby Demelash Wodajo ደመላሽ ወዳጆ is now Alexander Cole. The Coles, we gather, chose the name "Alexander" not just because it carried the same meaning in the Greek and Ethiopian [avenger/defender] but because it matched the names of their three children (Ashleigh, Allyson and Andrew). This is understandable though the idea of leaving no trace of Demelash's ደመላሽ heritage (except for his color) is not. Pastor Cole, a Baptist minister and very likely familiar with naming in our part of the world, should be the first to admit the linguistic and cultural significance of the choice. It is true the Coles are excited and gracious about their adopted son. But in the end, Alexander is not going to adequately make up for the loss of Demelash nor will "Alex" for "Deme". Alex is just Alex whereas Deme ደሜ is "my blood, my root, my line, my life". So what is in a nam...

Demographic Anarchy?

Demographic Anarchy? By Mitiku Adisu Lemma Guya Ask five Ethiopians the religious composition of their country, and you will most likely get six points of disagreement. Demographic data have become a weapon to lock others into an inferior position and, conversely, accord oneself a dominant status even when the facts militate against the assertion. Thus is perpetuated a jaundiced view of self and society before the watching world. Some don’t bother to acknowledge the presence of a sizable evangelical Christian population ( at least 19 million ) outside the mainstream Orthodox Church. “In relation to religion,” says one presenter, “the population constitute 51% Orthodox Christian, 33% Islam, and the rest 16% are other religious sects. ” [Italics added] Those who engage in numbers games are mainly the educated elite who tend to exhibit nationalistic and cultural fervor. The economist Dr. Berhanu Abegaz, in his analysis of the 1994 Population and Housing Census of Ethiopia,  labeled P...
